Richard’s Story

The Poetry

Richard published two volumes of poetry in his life time.

Here we present just a few of his works.

THINKING OF YOU IN SWITZERLAND...

I wanted to go onto the mountains

find my way up the cragface alone

through the webs of creeping angles

        and the deep echoing pits

so the dark icy winds could counsel me

        with their eternal wisdom

calming my mind as ripples on a lake

and show me what course to set ship

for I am bemused by the world's values

with contrasts such as 'failure' and 'success'

i need new answers to old questions

need to hear sounds of eternity echo within me

need to know the tranquillity of stars

ROCK OF MY HOMELANDS

    Harbour is safe and content,

Yet a vessel is built for the seas

    Would be wasted with barnacles

If the voyage was never undertaken

    The floodtide taken

    The stinging rainbow spray felt.

Presiding over my comings and goings

    Providing shelter when gales

Drive me back in thundery fear,

You are the love and security

    I need to sail by the stars;

You are the rock of my homelands.

WITH LOVE RICH.
